EHS Director, Victoria Justus, Publishes Chapter in Major Guidance Document for Educational Facilities Management Professionals
Our own Victoria Justus, EHS director for WasteStrategies, recently published an integral chapter in APPA’s new Maintenance Volume, relating to regulatory compliance for Facilities Management (FM) Professionals in Educational Institutions.
A well-established consultant before merging her consulting company with Waste Strategies, Victoria specializes in environmental and safety expertise in the college and university setting. She is also well-known for establishing a professional-led peer audit program for colleges and universities to establish WPA compliance and enforcement initiatives.
Victoria was approached by the technical editor of the new APPA guidance manuals and asked to compile a contribution addressing regulatory compliance in FM guidance documents.
This is the first time regulatory compliance has been addressed in the APPA manuals and reflects the culture change evolving as regulations are more consistently enforced in institutions. The guides, in three volumes and now available for purchase, are intended to provide professional guidance and expertise on a full array of issues pertinent to the FM professionals within those same institutions.
Compliance, safety and sustainability are thoroughly discussed in Victoria’s chapter 12, and it is noted in the forward as a “major addition to the guideline.”
Author Thomas Becker remarked, “When you think back over the years, things that were once just good practice concerning sustainability, such as recapturing chlorofluorocarbon and recycling certain materials, are now compliance mandates that have legal ramifications. These practices must be accounted for within budgets and staffing allocations. This chapter provides invaluable compliance checklists. It also begins to explore facilities management practices that are now crossing over into the teaching curriculum as “living and learning practices” become more commonplace. We believe if a facilities department can cement this type of relationship in a positive, rather than adversarial way, it will become a valuable learning experience for the students and a win-win for all concerned.”
Victoria is honored to be a contributing partner in the APPA publications providing vision, transformation, stewardship, collaboration and leadership in today’s ever-changing professional and regulatory environment.
